A Parent’s Guide to Choosing the Right Abacus Learning Program

As a parent, there is a significant amount of responsibility to ensure your child has a secure future. The sense of security comes in many faces, from a cozy, warm home and comfort food to clothes and Entertainment.

Particularly in the Asian Subcontinent, this isn’t enough, parents feel a great need to be invested in their child’s education to ensure they are not lagging in school and life.

Do you remember being afraid of a certain subject in school? That feeling of fear had quite a ripple effect on other subjects, too, didn’t it?

For most, it was the mathematics class that was a nightmare to attend. You would start a new session with so much enthusiasm to be on top of everything, to never skip a lesson or homework and not let go of another year in anxiety.

However, just the desire alone isn’t enough. Certain fundamentals were left open-ended. Today, we are going to address them and guide you to a more enriched and meaningful Academic path for your child.

We wish there was a learning program that not only enhanced our maths skills but also sharpened our brain and exponentially enhanced our critical thinking.

Today, there is, UCMAS – short for Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System– a unique and scientifically proven Mental development program. Founded in Kuala Lumpur, it has success stories in over 80 countries.

What does UCMAS do differently?

UCMAS uses the Abacus, short for Abundant Beads, Addition, and Calculation Utility System. It’s also known as a counting frame.

The abacus is an ancient tool that was used for calculations centuries ago, it is a manual tool used to keep track of numbers and perform basic mathematical operations.

Many ask, is Abacus good for the brain?

The wonderous effects of Abacus on a child’s mind are –

  • Improved Visualization Skills – Students visualize the Abacus in their mind to perform arithmetic problems.
  • Increased Spatial Memory – The manipulations of beads physically and mentally lead to a greater understanding of Spatial Memory.
  • Improved hand and eye coordination – Moving the beads up and down, switching rods to keep a tab of the Unit’s Place results in synchronised hand and eye coordination.

Let’s dig deeper into the world of Abacus learning to know about its effect and ever-lasting impacts on a child’s brain.

Traditional Math VS Mental Math

Traditionally, mathematics as a subject has had a huge dependency on rote memorization. Abacus gives you the wings to soar high into the world of Mental Arithmetic Calculations as it makes math visual and hands-on. Kids understand why numbers work. This leads to a deeper understanding of numbers. The abacus can surely make math fun and engaging.

Additional benefits of Learning Abacus include

  • Improved Focus & Attention
  • Efficiency in listening and attention to detail
  • Increased accuracy and efficiency

What are the key differentiators of UCMAS Abacus learning?

  • Small batch size of 15 students per class.
  • Experienced and Qualified teachers.
  • Online abacus classes are available too.

The UCMAS class environment is designed to be stress-free, with only 2 hours of class per week and a minimum 20-minute practice at home each day, your child can easily become a math wizard and stand out in their school.

Let’s see the best time to enroll your child for maximum advantage:

We at UCMAS begin enrolling children as early as 5.5 years, This is the best time for children to engage in learning a new skill, as their brains soak up knowledge like a sponge.

Abacus Age Limit –

  • Children aged 5.5 -8 years enroll for an additional introductory level before moving on to the Foundation module.
  • Children aged 8 years and above enroll directly in the Foundation Module.

UCMAS Abacus levels:

  • Foundation Level– 12 months
  • Works on the Introduction of concepts of addition and subtraction.
  • Increasing proficiency in using an abacus
  • Introduction of mental arithmetic.
  • Construction Level– 12 months
  • Introduction and increasing proficiency in multiplication and division.
  • Increased proficiency and speed in mental arithmetic
  • Advance Level – 12 months
  • Introduction of decimals.
  • Increased proficiency in multiplication and division.
  • Increase in Speed and accuracy of mental arithmetic.

Kids learn in different ways. Some are visual learners. Others are kinesthetic learners. Abacus learning can appeal to both types. The abacus is a visual tool. It also involves hands-on manipulation.

Additionally, the effect of learning Mental Arithmetic through the medium of Abacus brings together Logic, linear thinking, and mathematics along with Imagination and visualization.

It’s a beautiful blend of logic and imagination.

Studies have confirmed a strong link between the use of Abacus learning and its visible impact on a student’s problem-solving, application of Logic & Critical thinking.

If you are looking for an all-around development of your child, a program like the UCMAS Abacus learning will not only sharpen your child’s brain in many ways, but it will also bring out the best version of your child.

When your child feels confident, learning becomes fun, and their curiosity and problem-solving approach in school prepares them for life ahead.
