As we all know and understand that UCMAS uses the ancient ABACUS as a teaching tool. Many parents question this way of learning because the easier alternative is to use a calculator and not lose focus on the subject.
Why use the Abacus when you can have all the answers at your fingertips through a digital calculator?
Before we begin to explain the why, let’s illustrate with an example –
Imagine a group of students playing a math game, “Let’s see who calculates these numbers faster, using a calculator.”
A kid starts calling out a series of numbers to be added, some tough 3-digit numbers like 145+285+307+482+565 and so on, everyone has buried their head in the calculator trying to rush through the calculations, some type a wrong digit and must do it all over again, some are getting anxious just at the sound of all these numbers, they can’t catch up with the speed of the numbers being called out.
Then, there is one kid in the group who has already done the calculation and has the answer ready! He did not even use the calculator!
When checked, his answer is also accurate.
What made this child faster than the others, and most importantly, derive the correct answer without a calculator? How is that even possible?
It is! When a student has undergone the UCMAS program, there is no doubt that their calculations are happening at a super sonic speed. They are all happening in the mind, there is no device bringing any distractions or leaving any scope for error.
This is simply because this child learnt how to do mental arithmetic calculations using an Abacus, now he is so proficient that he doesn’t even need a physical abacus, it’s all in his mind. That can very well be seen as a superpower that any child at school would want.
